Is it an emergency?

Pets cannot tell us what is wrong. Tap what you are seeing below for clear guidance on whether to call now. This is a starting point, not a diagnosis.

Advanced medicine

Capabilities most emergency hospitals cannot offer

CARE was built for the cases that need more than stabilization. Our team combines emergency expertise with advanced technology to give your pet every advantage.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy

A pressurized chamber of pure oxygen that accelerates healing, reduces inflammation, and fights infection. It can benefit chronic wounds, burns, and certain neurological conditions.

An advanced blood-filtering treatment used in select critical and toxin cases, offering options for patients who need more than standard supportive care.

Advanced tools including X-ray, ultrasound, CT, and in-house blood work, run and read throughout the weekend so your family gets answers and treatment without waiting days for results.

Minimally invasive internal examination that helps locate problems and retrieve foreign objects with less stress on your pet.

Skilled surgeons handle procedures from soft tissue to complex cases, prioritizing minimally invasive techniques for comfort and smoother recovery.

A safe, monitored environment with veterinary supervision and supportive care for pets that need extended treatment and observation.

Referring veterinarians

Our story

We take care of pets, and our people too

Coastal Animal Referral Emergency was founded in 2021 by Dr. Melissa Krause, a Seaford, Virginia native and experienced veterinarian. Her goal was to create a different kind of practice: a beacon of growth and medical advancement for its staff and the community it serves.

That culture shows in the care your pet receives. A team that is supported gives calmer, more compassionate care when families need it most.

Your healthy pet could be a hero

Blood products are often needed in our hospital, and healthy dogs and cats can become donors. A single donation can help save another pet facing a life-threatening emergency.

  • Donors help our team respond to critical emergencies

Families come to CARE from across Hampton Roads

When local emergency rooms and day practices are full or booked out, getting your pet seen should not have to wait. Pet owners travel to CARE from across the region, and our team works to get emergencies in. Save our number now so it is ready if you ever need it.

Full diagnostics, all weekend long

Many area emergency rooms and clinics do not run or read advanced imaging on weekends, leaving families waiting until the week resumes. CARE runs and reads X-ray, ultrasound, and CT right through the weekend, so your pet gets a diagnosis and starts treatment without waiting.
